Beginning of Christianity in Latvia is dated with 12th century. It reached Latvia during the Crusade, and later split into different confessions: Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Russian Orthodox, which are the main confessions in Latvia today.
Since the Reformation movement in 16th century, Lutheran church has played the leading role in Latvia with the exception of the eastern regions where Catholicism is more widespread.
Although not widely popular, there are also Jewish, Muslim, Mormon, Hare Krishna, Buddhist and other congregations in Latvia.
