Latvian is the official state language in Latvia and is one of the official languages of the European Union.
It belongs to the Baltic language group of the Indo-European language family and there are about 1,5 million native Latvian speakers. There are three dialects in Latvian divided in several sub-dialects the use of which differs among the regions in Latvia. The Latgalian dialect spoken in the eastern part of the country – in Latgale, has a special place within the Latvian language.
