Latvia consists of four historic regions—Kurzeme, Zemgale, Vidzeme and Latgale. Kurzeme is the western part of Latvia, bordered by the Baltic Sea. Zemgale occupies the central part of Latvia and in south borders with Lithuania. Vidzeme is the eastern region, enclosed by the Gulf of Riga, Estonia and Russia. Latgale lies in the south-eastern part of Latvia and borders with Russia, Byelorussia and Lithuania.
