Jūrmala is one of the largest resorts in the Baltic States and the second largest town in Latvia. Earlier in Jūrmala several fishermen villages were located, which gradually transformed into districts of luxurious summer cottages. From one side Jūrmala is bordered by the Baltic Sea, but from the other – by the River Lielupe, which is one of the largest rivers of Latvia. Jūrmala is the right place to enjoy health care and recreation facilities as well as active leisure activities: to play tennis, to sail on a yacht or to enjoy the activities offered by the aqua park. In Jūrmala such facilities as nature trails and cycling routes are created, thus making the town friendly to everybody – those travelling with bicycles as well as those choosing train, car and water transport. Devotees of literature are offered the possibility to visit the house of Aspazija and the memorial summer cottage of Aspazija and Rainis. The Jūrmala Seaside Museum will give insight into the life of fishermen. Summer in Jūrmala is particularly active period – the beach is full of holiday-makers, in the Dzintaru Concert Hall concerts are organized and in cafes and restaurants of the city vibrates the joy of living.
