Staicele is a small town on the bank of the River Salaca not far from the Latvian-Estonian frontier. At the beginning of the 19th century in the place where Staicele stands now there was only a pub, a stable and a ferryman’s house, however changes were introduced with the paper mill built in 1897. Upon development of production, the railway route to Staicele was built, and the number of employees increased rapidly. The paper mill experienced the golden age around 1985. The city is attractive due to its wooden buildings, well-kept banks of the River Salaca, parks and calm atmosphere. The most remarkable attractions are the Staicele Liv Museum “Pivalind”, the cable bridge and the Lutheran Church. On the bank of the River Salaca lies the open air stage “Zem ozola”, which is the place, where enjoyable festivals, theatre performances and concerts are organized. Adrenaline junkies will enjoy the pulley over the River Salaca. Nearby Staicele, Vīksnu Caves are located.
