Valmiera is one of the largest and oldest cities in Vidzeme. In the historical sources it was mentioned back in the 11th century. Through Valmiera meanders the River Gauja, separating the city into two. The city is easily accessible to travellers along a motorway, by train and by water transport. The name in the city is associated with the legendary walker Jānis Daliņš. Travellers may enjoy a calm walk along the Park Vecpuišu Parks and the steep coasts in the River Gauja. In the city it is possible to visit Saint Sīmanis Church, which was built in the 13th century, and the castle ruins. In evenings it is possible to see the performances of the Valmiera Drama Theatre or to go to the cinema. Not far from Valmiera Zilaiskalns Hill and the Gauja National Park are located.
