Riga region surrounds the area of the capital city and towards the north borders with sea. There are numerous places that might be of interest to visitors, all accessible by car, bus or train. The nicest locations include the city of Sigulda—one of the most beautiful towns of Latvia with breathtaking views, Gutmana Cave, museum and nature reserve of Turaida as well as the Sigulda castle ruins. Sigulda’s visitors will have a rare opportunity to experience an extraordinary attraction of going down a bobsleigh track—a speedy and icy activity. Another excellent destination is the seaside city of Jurmala. It is located 25 km from Riga and is the most well-known sea resort town of the Baltic States. In summer it is full of holiday-makers from Latvia, Russia and other European countries. The beach of Jurmala is excellent for sunbathing and taking long walks while the city’s hotels offer SPA and beauty treatments. Those preferring more active ways of recreation can go yachting, horse riding or playing tennis. Jurmala is unique also with its simple but ornate pre-war wooden architecture, which is pleasant for the eye and seemingly light as summer itself. The city essentially is a summer retreat, every June coming to life anew. It has many holiday houses, hotels and outdoor cafés. The beach, however, is suitable for other activities—ball games, swimming, sunbathing and occasional partying. If the hustle and bustle of Jurmala is too much for you, venture beyond the borders of Riga region towards the lonely beaches of Kurzeme because Jurmala becomes quiet only in winter with only an occasional visitor walking on the seaside and contemplating the frozen sea.
