Add Kurzeme is the western region Latvia. In the mind of the locals it has always been associated with sea, sand dunes, prosperous towns, thick forests, mysterious marshes and picturesque landscapes. From the western side Kurzeme is washed by the Baltic Sea, from the northeast—by the Gulf of Riga. Being encompassed by seas, Kurzeme has beautiful long beaches stretching 300 km long. Since the seaside of Kurzeme is not densely populated, you will have a chance to experience total peace and closeness to nature. Kurzeme is an attractive region with many different things to see and enjoy. It has coastal cities with curious port territories and pretty wooden architecture (Ventspils and Liepaja); it has picturesque medieval towns with narrow lanes and small taverns (Kuldiga, Talsi, Pavilosta); and after all, Kurzeme has the most pleasant landscapes. Travelling along the coast, look for local canteens which serve freshly cooked or smoked fish, caught by local fishermen. The town of Kuldiga is worth a special note, since it has the widest waterfalls in Europe (240 m), called “Ventas Rumba.” And it can be justly said that Kuldiga is one of the most beautiful towns of Kurzeme—it is tiny, old and extremely romantic.
