Daugavpils is the second largest city in Latvia. For the first time Daugavpils was mentioned in the historical sources of the 13th century, however already by the 5th century this territory was related with one of the most significant trade routes in the Eastern Europe, which provided contacts between Russia and Greece. In Daugavpils and in particular in its historical centre many significant historical cultural objects can be found. The historical centre of the city is interesting because of the diversity of buildings and building facades made of red bricks of a special form, which have been denoted – the Baroque Style in Latgale. One of the most remarkable attractions is the Daugavpils Fortress, which has been preserved until today without significant reconstruction. Not far from the city the natural park “Daugavas Loki” is located. The name of Daugavpils is known also in the context of art history, as this is the birth-place of the famous artist Marks Rotko.
